What makes this trail special

This trail keeps kids engaged without needing a destination. The lagoon is constantly active, which makes the walk feel more like an experience than just exercise.

Wildlife to watch for

Families often spot ospreys, great blue herons, and egrets. Another fun surprise is the mullet fish, which frequently leap out of the water.

But the biggest highlight for many kids is the swallows nesting beneath the I-5 bridge.

Must-see moment: Between March and July, baby swallows can be seen chirping in their mud nests while parents fly back and forth with food. Kids absolutely love this.

What families should know

The trail is flat and easy, but restroom access is limited. Plan ahead since the only restrooms are at the Del Mar dog park.
